On February 11, 2025, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) proudly hosted Student Aid Advocacy Day, bringing together more than 450 students from 34 member campuses to raise their voices in support of vital state-funded student aid and opportunity programs.

Students participated in over 75 meetings with policymakers, calling on the Legislature to:

  • Protect and increase funding for opportunity programs such as HEOP, EOP, CSTEP, STEP, and TAP
  • Expand the “Free Community College” proposal to include independent colleges and universities
  • Reject proposed cuts to Bundy Aid, a critical source of support for independent institutions

Throughout the day, students shared powerful personal stories that highlighted how these programs have changed their lives and opened doors to opportunity. Their voices sent a clear message: investing in student aid is investing in New York’s future.

In addition to student meetings, CICU hosted a rally at the Capitol featuring remarks from key state leaders and advocates, including Senate Higher Education Chair Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, Senator Kevin Parker, and HESC President Dr. Guillermo Linares. They joined CICU President Lola Brabham, advocates, and students in calling for New York State to prioritize independent higher education and ensure equity in access to financial aid.

By the end of the day, the collective efforts of students, educators, and advocates generated over 1,000 advocacy interactions—a powerful demonstration of the sector’s strength and unity.
