Independent Sector Distinguished Alumni
The Independent Sector boasts some of the most influential, innovative and outstanding individuals as graduates: men and women who help make New York State great.
For all the individuals recognized here, higher education shaped who they have become. They include native New Yorkers, as well as those who hail from many other states and countries but choose to call the state their home, and have talents in many different areas. Some are the first in their families to earn a college degree; others have received support from New York State's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and/or its Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). Some acquired an undergraduate degree from a New York State independent college; others completed a master's or doctoral degree at one of our outstanding universities. Some were political science or education or business majors; others earned a doctorate in physics, others in health administration, yet others in law. From entrepreneurs to family business owners, to not-for-profit directors and industry leaders, these alumni are world-renowned architects; environmental advocates; health care professionals; educators; military heroes; government leaders, novelists, attorneys, financial managers, school superintendents, and college presidents, to name a few.
All share in common that they are graduates of New York State's private, not-for-profit colleges and universities. In the end, the college experience has meant more than a degree, more than a career path. It fully opened up the world to these individuals, making them catalysts in their families and communities, where they continue to give back, helping new generations move forward into the future.
