Driving Innovation Through Discovery

Conducting Research to Improve Lives

  • New York State’s colleges and universities spent $5.6 billion on research and development in fiscal year 2014.[1]
  • Independent Sector institutions are responsible for 74 percent ($4.2 billion) of the total, and for more than a decade have consistently generated three-quarters of the state’s annual higher education R&D spending.
  • A catalyst for innovation, New York’s private, not-for-profit colleges and universities have steadily increased their production of patents, licenses, and start-ups since the mid-nineties.[2]
