New York Institute of Technology President Edward Guiliano Elected Treasurer of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu)
Edward Guiliano, president of New York Institute of Technology, has been elected treasurer by the Board of Trustees of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu). cIcu represents the chief executives of New York’s 100+ independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities on issues of public policy.
Since becoming president in 2000, Edward Guiliano has led the transformation of NYIT into a broadly distinguished institution of higher learning with national, global, and digital recognition in the fields of architecture, medicine, communications, engineering, and educational technology.
Under Guiliano’s leadership, NYIT has been consistently ranked as one of America’s best colleges by a number of publications and has received the praise of specialized accrediting agencies. During his presidency, NYIT has significantly increased the size and quality of its diverse student body of more than 15,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and 98 countries; recruited seasoned administrators and distinguished faculty members; and added campuses and sites in North America, South America, the Middle East, Asia, and online to complement NYIT’s hub campuses in Manhattan and Long Island.
Most recently, Guiliano spearheaded the development of a bold 2030 strategic plan, designed to position NYIT as the model for a 21st-century global university. Guiliano has already overseen a major renovation and construction of campus facilities and has implemented branding and marketing programs that have enhanced the college’s national and international reputation.
An eloquent spokesman and advocate for global higher education, Guiliano is a frequent presenter at major conferences around the globe. In addition to cIcu Guiliano serves as a board member and officer for several nonprofit and educational organizations including the United Way of Long Island and the Fair Media Council. In 2007, Guiliano was elected chairman of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE), a consortium of 19 regional colleges and universities.
Guiliano began his NYIT career as an English professor in 1974 and continues to teach one course a year. In 1988, he was the youngest person in NYIT history to be promoted up the ranks to full professor. Prior to his presidency, he served as vice president for academic affairs and provost. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

The Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) represents the chief executives of New York's 100+ independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities on issues of public policy. Member colleges compose the largest private sector of higher education in the world and confer most of the bachelor's degrees (56%), master's degrees (72%), and doctoral and first-professional degrees (80%) earned in New York State.
CICU member campuses enroll more than 466,000 students, including nearly 300,000 New York State residents. One in three (27%) New Yorkers enrolled full time at independent colleges and universities in the state comes from a family earning less than $40,000 annually. And most (52%) African-American and Latino students who earn their bachelor's and graduate degrees in New York State are Independent Sector alumni.
