President of Marymount Manhattan College, Judson R. Shaver, elected to Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu) Board of Trustees

Judson R. Shaver., president of Marymount Manhattan College, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu). cIcu represents the chief executives of New York’s 100+ independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities on issues of public policy.

In July 2001, Judson R. Shaver became the President of Marymount Manhattan College, where he also serves as a Professor of Religious Studies. Marymount Manhattan College is a liberal arts college located in Manhattan, New York, that attracts 2, 000 undergraduate students from 48 states and 36 countries. Before coming to Marymount Manhattan, Dr. Shaver served as Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Iona College, where he also held the rank of Professor. Dr. Shaver is the recipient of multiple awards: Fulbright, Brown University, NEH and Danforth Fellowships.

cIcu Board officers, all of whom are college and university presidents, are: Lisa Marsh Ryerson of Wells College, chair; David A. Caputo of Pace University, vice-chair; Frances D. Fergusson of Vassar College, secretary; Charles J. Beirne, S.J. of Le Moyne College, treasurer. Board Committee chairs are: Jeanne H. Neff of The Sage Colleges, Legislative Committee and Nominating Committee; John E. Sexton of New York University, Regulatory Committee; Robert A. Miller of Nazareth College of Rochester, Communications Committee; Charles J. Beirne, S.J., Finance & Administrative Committee.

Other college and university presidents elected to the cIcu Board of Trustees are: Robert A. Scott, Adelphi University; Anthony G. Collins, Clarkson University; George Campbell, Jr., The Cooper Union; Thomas Keith Meier, Elmira College; Joseph M. McShane, S.J., Fordham University; Edward Guiliano, New York Institute of Technology; Philip A. Glotzbach, Skidmore College; Todd S. Hutton, Utica College; Richard M. Joel, Yeshiva University.

The Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) represents the chief executives of New York's 100+ independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities on issues of public policy. Member colleges compose the largest private sector of higher education in the world and confer most of the bachelor's degrees (56%), master's degrees (72%), and doctoral and first-professional degrees (80%) earned in New York State.

CICU member campuses enroll more than 466,000 students, including nearly 300,000 New York State residents. One in three (27%) New Yorkers enrolled full time at independent colleges and universities in the state comes from a family earning less than $40,000 annually. And most (52%) African-American and Latino students who earn their bachelor's and graduate degrees in New York State are Independent Sector alumni.
